EXPLORATION

Exploration of my creative abilities began at a young age. Too long ago for me to remember.
— Alexia J Coney

I cannot remember the first time I picked up a paint brush & realized what magic it held when dipped into a form of pigment. Or the first time I formed something out of clay- But I do recall being surrounded by creative outlets. A tricycle, a chair being delicately, ornately painted in the living room by my mother. The earrings being assembled by my father. The way he used his hands & tools in conjunction to bend the wire. The smells & the "awe" watching as my mother would hand- tint her photography.

In school (Pre-school & Kindergarten), I was praised for my amazing abilities to focus cutting so beautifully, & coloring within the lines- something to later translate into perfectionistic, obsessive qualities. At age 6 I decided I needed to make my own stuffed animal. Going on a hunt throughout the house I ended up with a horse made out of plastic bags, some silk scrap & part of a boa from my dress up box.

An Evening at the Museum

In 1996 the Seattle Art Museum was proud to host an Exhibit of Edgar Degas's work. Much of it being drawings & sketches. In viewing the exhibit you were given a pencil, eraser & some drawing paper to carry with you throughout the Exhibit. Drawing & replicating the pieces that spoke to you. I can still remember my excitement walking up the stairs to get my supplies needed to appreciate the art we were viewing. I was 6, focused on the goal at hand. Alexia was in her "element".
